– Har en annen avtale

Onsdag den 14. november arrangeres Norsk kulturråds årskonferanse. Hovedtaler er Documenta-kurator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, og etter møtet vil kulturlivets representanter bli busset til Asrup Fearnley Museet på Tjuvholmen. Dette vil imidlertid bli en busstur uten Christov-Bakargiev, for hun har «en annen avtale».

Astrup Fearnley Museet har de siste ukene vært under kritikk for sin sponsoravtale med Lundin Petroleum, et selskap som er under etterforskning for brudd på folkeretten under den såkalte oljekrigen i Sudan i 1997–2003.

I en epost til Kunstkritikk skriver Christov-Bakargiev at kunstlivet må være «årvåkne og aktive og fordømme alle forbindelser med aktører som er involvert i beviselig kriminell aktivitet». Hun understreker at hun ikke kjenner forholdet mellom Astrup Fearnley Museet og Lundin Petroleum men at hun skal sette seg inn i dette før hun kommer til Oslo.

I steden for å gå på Norsk kulturråds mottakelse vil Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev spise middag med OCA-direktør og documenta-kollega Marta Kuzma.

Christov-Bakargiev ber i eposten spesifikt om at Kunstkritikk ikke skal trykke kun deler av hennes svar, men hele eposten. Dette gjør vi naturligvis gjerne, og det på originalspråket. Vi trykker dessuten de tre spørsmålene vi sendte til Bakargiev.

2. Do you think it is necessary for the art world to take action when this kind of relations are made public?

Hello, thank you for your email.

Now, my reply may seem ”diplomatic”, but it actually is the reality. I will not answer 1, 2, 3 but can answer all three together because I do not adhere to the logics of ”1, 2, 3” and rather believe in an organic, complex web of realities and knowledges.

I’d like to first of all inform you that I am unable to attend the reception due to another commitment that same evening, indeed with Marta Kuzma, whom as you know was an agent for documenta and thus I will be having dinner with her that evening, after the meeting is over.

Furthermore, I was not aware until yesterday of this association between the Museum and this sponsor, and I am not knowledgeable about the accusations, but I will now read about them on the Internet.

Should it all be true, then of course I would say that I am firmly against any association between any art institution and companies that act unethically and unjustly in the world and I believe the art community must be vigil and active in denouncing any associations with parties involved in any proven criminal activities.
